Chicago, IL

Bring the family and experience the wonders of the Philippines, as the Chicago Children's Museum (CCM) features the Philippines during its "Passport to the World" series.

The Museum will host displays of Philippine crafts and exhibits, as well as interactive productions by native performers and artists, during the weekend of June 11-14, 2009.

Thursday, June 11, 2009 5:30pm - 8:00pm
Saturday, June 13, 2009 12:00pm - 4:30pm
Sunday, June 14, 2009 12:00pm - 4:30pm

The CCM's "Passport to the World" series showcases the arts and traditions of Chicago's many ethnic groups to provide opportunities for museum visitors to better understand Chicago's unique multicultural community. Previous "Passport to the World" exhibits showcased Chicago's Korean, Persian and American Indian communities.

This will be the second time that the series celebrates the Philippines. The weekend celebration begins on Thursday evening, June 11, 2009. The exhibits and performances will then continue Saturday and Sunday (June 13-14).

On Thursday evening, both the Children's Museum and the opening reception are free to the public. Although there is no extra charge for the Passport to the World: Philippines event on Saturday and Sunday, attendees must pay the regular CCM entrance fee.
The event will include a variety of fun "hand's on" programs for kids.

"We're very proud and excited to have this opportunity to share our culture with our greater Chicago community," said Ruben Salazar, chairman of the planning committee for the program. "Our local Filipino-American community is the second largest Asian American group in the metropolitan area. It's a great opportunity for uniting the many Filipino-American organizations and individual Pinoys throughout the Chicago area."

Volunteers and sponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact the steering committee for more information on how you can help make this celebration a success.

This event is a collaborative program by FAN, Samahang Kapatid and other Filipino American organizations.

FAA (Filipinos for Affirmative Action) Annual Event -- Pinay Jazz Concert, April 16th

Dear Friends,

I hope this message finds you well. I would like to invite you to join us on Thursday, April 16th at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center for a night of Pinay Jazz. This is FAA's annual event and we thought we would change it up this year. Pinay Jazz will spotlight the contributions of Filipina jazz vocalists to this uniquely American genre. A cross-generational cast of talented women will perform classic and Latin jazz standards in their uniquely Pinay styles.

We will also be honoring Tessie Guillermo, CEO of ZeroDivide for her inspirational leadership and accomplishments. She has been a tireless advocate for reducing the digital divide in her role as CEO of Zero Divide, an expert in the health policy field as former CEO of APIA Health Forum and as a co-founder of The President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and an inspiration and role model for aspiring leaders among Filipinas in particular.

These days whenever we turn on the TV or listen to the radio, we hear about the uncertain economic climate, the increasing job loss and the continuing wave of foreclosures. The Filipino community, especially low-income immigrants and low-wage workers have been directly affected. Many more people are seeking help from FAA regardless of the issue they face. This event will help us raise funds for FAA and it will allow the organization to serve the various needs of the Filipino community in the East Bay.

I hope you will join us. Spend the evening listening to the talented jazz musicians and support an organization who has been serving the Filipino community since 1973.

For more information on FAA or would like to donate online, please go to:

To order tickets online, please go to:

Sincerely,
Trina
Chair, FAA Board

Chicago Filipino WWII Veterans to Give Thanks and Receive Thanks" 3/28, 11am @ Rizal Center

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHICAGO FILIPINO WWII VETERANS TO GIVE THANKS AND RECEIVE THANKS
Community celebrates benefits authorized by President Obama for elderly veterans.

Contact: Sam del Rosario (773)727-8520
sdelrosario.chi@gmail.com

CHICAGO--In gratitude for President Obama's signing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act which included the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund, Filipino WWII veterans and community supporters are holding a celebration of thanks and appreciation not only for the sacrifices of the veterans but also for the many citizen and civic leaders who have helped on behalf of the veterans. Many local, state, and federal politicians who have supported the veterans in their decades long fight are invited to attend. The event will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 11am to 4pm at the Rizal Center, 1332 W. Irving Park Rd, Chicago, IL.

A local Filipino Veteran, Commander Arcadio "Itay" Calabas said of the compensation fund, "We are so very happy, especially that our marching and fighting and dying alongside American soldiers are being recognized, even though it is 63 years later".

"Correcting injustice is a long and arduous task. However, advocates must trust the wisdom of the people and the inherent value of the cause so they can keep their eyes on the prize of the struggle," said Jerry Clarito, Executive Director of the Illinois Veterans Equity Center.

The Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund (P.L. 111-5 Title X, Sec. 1002), authorizes the release of a one-time benefit of $15,000 to surviving eligible veterans who are American citizens, $9,000 for veterans who are Filipino citizens, in recognition for their US military active service. Families of veterans who have passed away are not eligible for the benefit. An estimated 250,000 Filipinos fought along side American forces to defend the Philippines during WWII. Today, fewer than 18,000 are still alive, according to US estimates. Approximately 30 veterans remain in the Chicago area.

While the Filipino veterans of American Legion FilAm Post 509 themselves are instrumental in organizing the event, they are receiving initial support from community organizations such as Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE), the Illinois Veterans Equity Center (IVEC), the Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago, FACC's Seniors and Veterans Program under Carmen Estacio, and the Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago (FACHIC).

BOOK LAUNCH OF LOS ANGELES’S HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN

LOS ANGELES (March 2009) – Carina Monica Montoya commemorates one of the most distinctive Asian/Pacific cultural legacies in the city through her new book Los Angeles’s Historic Filipinotown. The Filipino American Library (FAL), in partnership with the Historic Filipinotown Neighborhood Council, will present its Book Launch on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00pm at Lake Street Park (227 N. Lake St., Los Angeles 90026). Please RSVP for this free event by contacting filamlibrary@sbcglobal.net or 213-382-0488. FAL is also accepting advance orders for the book ($20/each plus shipping & handling).

The City Council of Los Angeles officially designated Historic Filipinotown on August 2, 2002 . It is the first Filipino community in the United States to merit a named area with distinct geographic boundaries. Historic Filipinotown was once home to one of the largest Filipino enclaves in California , a place where many Filipinos purchased their first homes, raised families, and established businesses. The cultural continuity of the area’s Filipino families and businesses inspired the collective efforts of Filipino organizations, Los Angeles community leaders, and individuals to establish Historic Filipinotown and maintain its vibrant culture.

In FAL Book Launches, authors introduce their Filipino works of literature with residents of Greater Los Angeles. Ms. Montoya will sign copies of Los Angeles’s Historic Filipinotown, which will be on sale that day. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Admission is free and donations are accepted online at www.filipinoamericanlibrary.org. Recent FAL Book Launches include Pareng Barack: Filipinos in Obama’s America by Benjamin Pimentel and Belong to Me by Marisa de los Santos .

Carina Monica Montoya, a native of Los Angeles and the author of Filipinos in Hollywood, collected the vintage images for this volume from Los Angeles historical organizations and families who settled in and around the area in the early years. Eric Garcetti, the President of the Los Angeles City Council, provides the foreword of Los Angeles’s Historic Filipinotown. It is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America series that celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country.

Founded on October 13, 1985 by “Auntie Helen” Agcaoili Summers Brown, FAL is the earliest and largest Filipino library in the country with a collection of more than 6,000 titles. Its mission is to actively promote the history, culture, and professional achievements of Filipinos and Filipino Americans through the book collection, leadership development, and cultural programming, thereby contributing to the achievement of a culturally dynamic, multiethnic America .

Given that FAL primarily survives on individual donations and one major annual fundraiser, it relies on its many supporters to continue its programs and services throughout the year. If anyone would like to give a donation online, please feel free to visit www.filipinoamericanlibrary.org. Checks may also be mailed to 135 N. Park View St. , Los Angeles , CA 90026 and made payable to “Filipino American Library”. All donations are 100% tax-deductible.

FAL is a division of the Filipino American Heritage Institute (Nonprofit Tax ID Number 95-4282571). It is open Mondays-Fridays 1:00-5:00pm and by appointment. For more information, please contact filamlibrary@sbcglobal.net or 213-382-0488.
