George Takei: Infinity Awesome

Quick blurb; George did a phone interview and spoke on some awesome topics. My favorites are listed:

Q. What was it like writing your autobiography?

A. My primary motivation was I wanted to talk about my boyhood behind the barbed-wire fences of American internment camps. People east of the Rockies seem to know little about that dark period of American history (after Pearl Harbor) when American citizens were summarily rounded up and imprisoned with no charges, no trial and no due process. I was 4 years old when we were picked up. I still remember soldiers with bayonets stomping up to our front door in Los Angeles and ordering us out. My mother was crying. We were taken to horse stables to live because the camps weren’t built yet.

Q. In 2005, you came out as a gay man, which many consider a very bold step for an actor.

A. I was living a closeted gay life at the beginning of my career. When you’re going for roles there are so many factors for decision-making — too short, too tall, too fat, too skinny, too young, too old — and I didn’t want to add “too gay” to the list of reasons they could reject me. But you come to a point where you get into a serious relationship and you want to bring your significant other to the party where everyone else is bringing their girlfriend or their wife.

Then in 2005, something important happened in California. Both houses of our Legislature passed the same-sex marriage bill, which was a historic event. All that was required was the signature of our governor (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who had campaigned by saying “I’m from Hollywood, I’m comfortable with gays and lesbians.” When he reneged, there was outrage. I felt I needed to speak out with my voice. I needed to be authentic.

Utada Hikaru - Come Back to Me MV

I posted a link to hear upcoming American single, Come Back to Me, in an earlier post. Now here's the music video! While some folks have said that this video doesn't look like her Japanese videos, well, uh, she's marketing this in the U.S.... Her Japanese videos are marketed in Asia. Also, this is a far better MV versus her Easy Breezy single. She looked really... too made up. In this one, much better and definitely more like Utada (aka Hikki). I wish I could meet her and get a picture with her. :)

Utada Hikaru: This is the One

I really like Utada Hikaru... except for her first official U.S. album called "Exodus" really, just, blah-ed on me. After hearing the single, "Easy Breezy" (...and I'm Japanese-y) chorus from that album, I really couldn't bring myself to listen to the rest of the album. When she released more Japanese singles, I totally loved them; like "Beautiful World" and "Kiss and Cry."

Finally, Utada will come out with another U.S. album and THIS album sounds promising, since I heard the first single off it called, "Come Back to Me." Listen to it here. Pre-order it here.

Props to DISGRASIAN for posting this! I like Hikki!! <3

Food Review: Ebikomaru

Aside from politics, Asian American randomness, Chicago drama, I love talking about food. I've always wanted to do random food reviews because my digital camera has so many pictures that I could essentially have my own collection of food p0rn. One of my goals in doing these reviews is to have an excuse to try food I haven't had before. Primarily food I have not eaten from the Tai Nam Supermarket, located by the Argyle red line station.

Today's snack is the Ebikomaru. I saw this and thought, hmm, shrimp wafers? Is it like the shrimp chips?

Upon closer examination and tastes, my partner and I agreed that while the snack is visually nice, it's taste was sadly blandish in flavor. We wanted it to work, but it didn't in the end. It had a weird light shrimp fishy smelling wafer deal. You know?

Poor Ebikomaru. Stay tuned for another blog post on another random food item from Tai Nam!

JACL Letter To American Girl Brands

JACL Letter To American Girl Brands

President

Dear Ms. Brothers:
As the oldest and largest Asian American civil rights and education organization in the United States, the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL) commends American Girl for its commitment to diversity and for promoting values that strengthen the character of young girls in our nation. However, it has come to our attention from one of our members that the packaging for your World War II doll contains a diorama that includes the headline "Japs bomb Pearl Harbor."

We fully understand the need to promote your series of historical dolls by using photos and images that depict a particular era in our history, but we are concerned by your choice of a headline that uses a racial epithet. The world has changed greatly in the sixty years since World War II. The term "jap" is a racial slur and though its use may have been tolerated during World War II, its use is certainly not tolerated today. You should be aware that the use of that term during the 1940s helped to vilify and demean Japanese Americans and was a factor that led to their forced eviction from their homes and communities on the West Coast, followed by their confinement in concentration camps.

Moreover, we are especially concerned because your product is marketed to young, impressionable children who may come to believe that the use of the term is acceptable. We don't believe there was malicious intent in packaging the dolls with this headline. We would request that you act immediately to repackage the World War II dolls in an appropriate manner removing the headline.

I look forward to your response to our concern.

Sincerely,
William Yoshino
Midwest Director

Magic We Can Believe In?

I don't know how to explain this video so I'll just post the link and you can decide for yourself. I found it off of Jossip's website and well, it's a video of Japanese magicians, dressed as Michelle and Barack Obama, doing magic tricks with a Mikan Orange...? Confused? Yeah, I thought so.

Pete Rouse - Obama's Man

I've been wanting to blog about this man for a while. I was reading the Asian Law Caucus' blog entry on working with Obama in fighting injustices. Then I read Japanese American Peter Rouse is White House Senior Adviser. Whoa! He's Japanese American! A fellow Asian American that has helped Obama PWN the White House?!?! That is totally badass. Want more info on him? I know you do!!

NYTimes talks about his background.
Muhalo has info too.

Tokyo Joe: The man who brought down the Chicago mob

I read about this at Imprint Talk and I must say, why haven't I heard about this guy? I mean, he survived a hit that he was 90% sure that he was going to get shot in. Talk about a bad hit job. The 2 guys who did the hit job, well, they got hit and died before they were brought to court.

His history in Chicago stems from his work as a mob guy, ranking pretty high in running his "bolito" and boasted that when he was 90 years old, he'd be happy to talk about his bolito. Well, he died at the age of 84 and only in the past year, were files released on him. There's a film named Tokyo Joe, created by Japanese film makers on this Japanese American. I'd love to see it except that it seems like the film dates are in Japanese and IN Japan. I need to figure out a way to get around this.
